Sustainable travelling with Socialbnb

Staying overnight at an aid organisation and thus supporting a school in Peru, preserving the rainforest or improve healthcare in South East Asia – the Start Up Socialbnb makes it possible. The online platform connects travellers with social and ecological aid organisations (NGOs) all over the world. We help these aid organisations out of their donation dependency by offering their unused rooms as overnight accommodation for travelers on our website. Travellers can find information about the projects and accommodation on our website and finally book an overnight stay at a local NGO. The price is paid locally and supports the project where the overnight stay took place. Travellers have the opportunity to have an authentic and local travel experience and get to know the country and its people in a completely new way. This way we want to create a sustainable tourism where everyone benefits.

Inspiration from a small village

It all started in a small village near the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh. Two team members met the resident Seng Thy on their travels, who wanted to provide free English lessons for the children of his village. His small aid organisation was struggeling with adequate financing. Together with the student initiative Enactus e.V., we developed the idea of renting the previously unused rooms of his house to travellers. With the money he was able to hire a teacher and buy school materials – since then the children have been receiving regular English lessons. Currently Socialbnb supports 60 aid organisations in more than 25 countries and has successfully handled more than 500 bookings.
